The Eucharides Painter

Biography: Athenian red-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley called him the Eucharides Painter naming him after the 'kalos' name inscribed on one of his vases. A pupil of the Nikoxenos Painter (q.v.), he decorated a variety of pot shapes. Although primarily a red-figure painter, he also worked in black-figure decorating a number of Panathenaic amphoras (the amphoras made to contain the oil given as prizes to victors in the Panathenaic games) and also a few other pot shapes. He appears to have been the first red-figure artist to have painted a number of Panathenaic vases (traditionally decorated in black-figure) after 500BC. Very many vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style.
