Biography: Campanian red-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Trendall called him the Capua Painter naming him after a hydria that he decorated in Capua. His work stood at the beginning of the second school of Capuan red-figure vase-painting. His favourite shapes were the hydria and amphora. He painted Dionysiac and funerary scenes (often including stelai) and also occasionally warriors and libation scenes. He decorated smaller vases with single figuers, standing or running women and stiffly standing draped youths. He made much use of added white. A prolific but uninspired painter, many vases have been attributed to his hand on the basis of style.
