Biography: Asteas (q.v.) and Python (q.v.) were the two leading painters in Paestum from about 365 BC to 330 BC and their workshop dominated Paestan vase painting during that period. They each signed some vases and in their more elaborate products their hands can be distinguised. In more modest works it is difficult to tell their hands apart. More than 1000 vases have been attributed to the workshop, over 500 of them small vases decorated mostly with single figures or a female head or, occasionally, birds and animals. Within the broad group of artists working in the Asteas and Python workshop, Trendall has been able to identify many individual hands.
