Biography: Athenian black-figure vase-painter whose name is unknown. Nevertheless consistent individual characteristics of style suggest the existence of a unique artistic personality. Beazley called him the Amasis Painter after the signature (epoiesen 'made it') of the potter Amasis (q.v.) on eight vases that he decorated. Numerous other vases have been attributed to him on the basis of style. He decorated a wide variety of shapes with elegance and imagination, developing his style in the course of time, for instance by introducing folds into garments which earlier had been left foldless. The potter (Amasis) and the painter may well have been the same man.
