- Biography
- Painter, mezzotinter and lithographer; father of George Raphael Ward and brother of William Ward ARA (1766-1826); Royal Academician. Began career as an engraver, later switched to painting.
Published under his own name, and also, in partnership with his brother, as 'Messrs Ward & Co' or 'James Ward & Co', c.1800-05.
Used 'Natural short-hand' system (invented 1766) for notes on his drawings.
Donated a complete set of annotated working and final proofs in 1817, in six portfolios (Ii,8-13). These are kept, with the exception of those removed and mounted, in the original albums with Ward's letter to the Keeper and a list, in case 194*.
