Biography: Younger son of Sir Edward Swinburne (1733-86), 5th Baronet, of Capheaton, Northumberland. Visited Italy in 1792-3 and 1797. Brother of Sir John Swinburne, 6th Bt; both were patrons of Joseph Mallord William Turner. Many of his drawings were sold with his uncle Henry Swinburne's in the 1970s by William Drummond and others with attributions to Henry; their styles were quite different, Henry's tight and with sepia washes and pen and ink, Edward's were in looser watercolour; five of his sketchbooks from Italy including dates from 21 July 1792- April 12,1793 are in the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, Ct.
