- Biography
- Andrea Meldolla, called Andrea Schiavone. Painter and etcher from Zara. Active in Venice. Bartsch (wrongly) separated Andrea Schiavone from Andrea Meldolla, considering them to have been two separate people. He attributed to Schiavone (Bartsch XVI, pp.77ff) a series of etchings that are actually by Battista del Moro. Schiavone was intensely experimental in his approach, using drypoint and etching together and constantly reworking his plates. He printed on papers washed with different colours and sometimes added colour by hand to the printed impressions. There is only one dated etching, the Abduction of Helen of 1547 (B.XVI.69.81). There is also a group of 4 woodcuts convincingly attributed to him as designer; there have been attempts to assign to him the woodcutting also.
