- Biography
- Portraitist and general painter, also produced aquatints. Son of John Sanders, pastel painter, of Norwich and Stourbridge. Entered the RA Schools 1769, exhibited RA 1771-88, although there is some confusion as to what belongs to Sanders or his father. Silver medal at the RA Schools for a 'Full academy figure' 1770. His early work covers a wide range of subjects. Moved to Norwich 1777 as a portrait painter, but also produced a large number of architectural drawings and prints. Returned to London in 1781. Moved to Bath in 1790, where he did a lot of teaching, and produced miniatures. Exploited market demand wherever he worked and adapted his specialisations to suit his prospective market.
Not to be confused with the mezzotinter and miniaturist Joseph Saunders.
Information from Elizabeth Heath who has thoroughly researched his life and activities - see the dossier for more information.
