- Painter; worked in Antwerp, Italy, Madrid, Paris and England; knighted by Charles I (q.v.); also a publisher, he was awarded a general privilege by the States General in 1618. His studio assistants include Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Jan van den Hoecke, Erasmus Quellinus, Pieter Soutman, Jan Boeckhorst, Justus van Egmont, Abraham van Diepenbeeck, David Teniers the Elder and Theodoor van Thulden (qq.v.).
