- Painter. Cesare Rossetti, b. Rome. The most probable date of birth, c. 1565, can be inferred from Baglione, who says he d. "in old age" under Urban VIII (1623-44) and implies that his earliest work was for Sixtus V (1585-90). On the other hand Baglione says that he worked at Caprarola "sotto la guida di Bartolommeo, pittore del Cardinale (Farnese)". If, as seems likely, the latter can be identified with Spranger who was at Caprarola only in 1570 (van Mander), this would imply a birth-date of at least ten years earlier. A member of Accademia di S. Luca by Oct. 1593, and of Virtuosi al Pantheon by 1606 (Thieme-Becker).
Of R.'s works in Rome listed by Baglione the following are extant: S. Prassede, some of yellow monochrome scenes in nave (cf. Ciampelli, Nogari) datable 1594-1600 (Buchowiecki, iii, p. 599). S. Eusebio, 'Crucifixion' and 'St Benedict and his Monks'. S. M. in Traspontina, chapel of S. Barbara, 1st on r., two scenes of martyrdom of saint, etc. after 1594 (Forcella, vi, p. 356, no. 1112; cf. Röttgen, no. 20), perhaps on designs by Cavaliere d'Arpino. Executed mosaics after Arpino's designs in Vatican, Torre dell'Orologia, valuation 25 July 1609 (Mancini-Salerno, ii, n. 1224) and cupola of St Peter's, valuation 4 Dec. 1612 (O. Pollak, 'Prussian Jahrbuch', xxxvi (1915), 'Beiheft', p. 80). In Sala degli Orazi e Curiazi, Palazzo dei Conservatori, Campidoglio, R. painted 'basamenti' (medallions with scenes of Roman history) underneath Arpino's frescoes (Baglione).
Record of payments for painting in Quirinal 1609 -19 (M. del Piazzo in 'II Quirinale', publ. Banca Nazionale dell'Agricoltura, Rome, 1973, pp. 246, 253ff; Orbaan, 'Documenti', p. 330) and in Vatican 29 Apr. 1619-30 June 1620, including restoration of Galleria delle Carte Geografiche (Orbaan, op. cit., pp. 330ff; Thieme-Becker).
Röttgen has recently attributed three paintings to R. (Röttgen, figs. 40-2).
