- Biography
- Brewer in the firm of Combe, Delafield & Co., Castle Street, Long Acre (later Watney, Come, Reid & Co.). His well-known Hogarth collection was purchased by the BM in March 1823 for 300 guineas (see J T Smith's reports dated 8 November and 13 December 1822, and 6 March 1823; it is recorded in Central Archives, 'Copies', p.78, etc.). This collection was placed in S,2 and Cc,1 to 3, and must have comprised most of the prints in those volumes, given that Smith stated that it comprised 661 items (see comment on S,2.1). The 'Book of Donations' under 12 April 1823 records the gift from Packer of 'various prints after Hogarth' which are not specified, and must have been supplementary to the purchased collection.
