- Biography
- The sculptor, draughtsman, printmaker and teacher.
Born in Castleford, Yorkshire, the son of a miner. Attended Leeds School of Art from 1919 and then studied at the Royal College of Art 1921-4. In 1925 he went to France and Italy on a travelling scholarship, returning to teach at the RCA until 1932. From 1932-39 he taught at Chelsea School of Art and from then on worked on his own. His first one-man show was held at the Warren Gallery in 1928 and his first retrospective at Temple Newson, Leeds in 1941. He was a member of the 7 & 5 Society, Unit One and also particicipated in the International Surrealist exhbitions in London in 1936 and in Paris in 1939. His monumental sculptures were bought by galleries throughout the world and several retrospectives held. A memorial exhibition was held at the Royal Academy in 1988. The British Museum held an exhibition (in conjunction with St Petersberg Press) 'Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs' in 1974. He became a Companion of Honour in 1955 and was awarded the Order of Merit in 1963. There were many posthumous exhibitions including: 55 years of his printmaking in 2000 at the Berkley Square Gallery, followed by a show of his sculptures, drawings and prints in 2003. 'Henry Moore: A Living Presence' toured Japan in 2003 and the same year Tate Modern displayed Public Sculptures. 'Moore: the Graphics' toured the UK from Wingfield Arts, Diss and the Dulwich Picture Gallery mounted a survey of his work, both in 2004. He lived at Perry Green, Much Hadham, Hertfordshire where his house, grounds and work now form the Henry Moore Foundation.
