- Biography
- Painter and printmaker, working in mezzotint and stipple; born in London, son of John Meyer, hairdresser, and his wife Anna Torade Hoppner, who was the sister of John Hoppner (q.v.); apprentice to Benjamin Smith, 1794-1801; then worked with Francesco Bartolozzi. 1805, married Maria Snow (1784-1856). 1821-26, exhibited at the RA; 1823, founder member of the Society of British Artists; 1827, vice president; 1828, president; 1829, resigned. Bankrupt, 1828/29 and again in 1840 when he was confined to the Debtors' Prison for Middlesex (London Gazette).
His name is sometimes given as Henry Hoppner Meyer; the publication line of a print from 1804 gives 'I. H. Meyer' at the address of 62 Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury, but 'Engraved by H. Meyer.' (see 1853,0112.1601). Later writers seem to have confused his name with that of his son Bernard Francis Hoppner Meyer (1811-88), known as Hoppner Meyer, who worked largely in North America.
