- Biography
- Flower and insect painter, and engraver after her own drawings. Born Frankfurt on the Main 1647, died Amsterdam 1717. Daughter of Matthäus Merian the Elder. Married Johann Andreas Graff in 1668 (separated in 1681) and had two daughters, Johanna Helena and Dorothea who both worked with their mother and painted in her style. Moved to Nuremberg in 1670, Frankfurt in 1685, and to Amsterdam in 1690. Voyage to Surinam 1699-1701, whence the material for her book 'Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium' in 1705.
