- Biography
- Printmaker, specialist in aquatint and reproducing drawings, 'Engraver of Drawings to the Queen'. Brother of G.R.Lewis, and father of J.F.Lewis, C.G. Lewis and F.C.Lewis jun. Worked initially for Ottley, and then for many years for Thomas Lawrence. Also a painter, exhibited at the RA. His son Charles George signed some proofs of their collaborations. He gave a group of his prints to the BM in 1836 (registered as S,9.) and almost certainly two earlier gifts in 1809 and 1817.
The Salisbury street address appears on one plate from a set of six views after Varley, all dated February 1806, of which others have the Queen Ann street address and others still have the address erased, suggesting a move occurred at around that time.
