- Biography
- American painter, sculptor and printmaker. Born in Brooklyn, lives in New York and Lincolnville, Maine. Studied at Cooper Union, NYC, 1946-49; Skowhegan School, Maine, 1949-50; Since 1954 spends summer in Lincolnville, associated with nearby Colby College; Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, 1972; Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 1988; Returned to Cooper Union as a Visiting Chair in Painting, 1994. Belongs to a tradition of figure painting going back to Manet and Matisse, with the American strand of Eakins and Hopper.
