- Biography
- Engraver, painter, art dealer and print publisher. Born in Antwerp, 1573. Son of Gerard de Jode (q.v.); brother of Cornelis (q.v.). Pupil of Hendrick Goltzius (q.v.). Married to Susanna Verhulst, niece of Pieter Coecke van Aelst and sister-in-law of Jan Brueghel I (q.v.). Living in Italy, namely Venice and Siena (with Florimi), in the 1590s; Probably back in Antwerp by 1599, when he matriculated into the Guild of St Luke; Dean of the Guild, 1608; Travelled to Paris, 1631-32. On death of his mother and Cornelis, inherited family stock in 1601, which he transformed by selling the Bible to Visscher and the maps to Vrints. On death in 1634, business left to his widow. She died in 1650s and his son Pieter II (qv) took over.
