Life dates: 1744-1800
Biography: Author. collector and etcher. Began as a weaver in Spitalfields, turned engraver and print dealer, and became fanatical collector, and promoter of works that had nothing to do with Hogarth. His collection was sold at Christie's anonymously on 6 May 1797 (see Sc.A.1.27). P&D has seven sketchbooks used by Ireland in collecting material for his various tours, of Holland, France, the Thames, Medway, Bath, Bristol, the Avon and Wye (1789-94) (1936,0604.1-7). His son William Henry Ireland perpetrated a famous Shakespeare forgery.
