Life dates: 1742-1810
Biography: Miniaturist and portrait painter in oils and crayons, collector of prints and drawings; b. Honiton 1742; d. London 1810; elected ARA 1779 and RA 1791; trained in London at Shipley's Academy 1757; studied under Samuel Collins at Bath 1760-62; in London as miniaturist, exh. SA 1765-71; damaged his eyesight after fall from horse 1771; with Romney to Rome 1773, where he studied oil painting until 1777; exh. RA 1779-83; sailed for India 1785, but shortly after returned to London and took up miniatures again; failing eyesight led him to shift to crayons; appointed Portrait Painter in Crayons to The King 1792; exh. RA 1788-97; went completely blind in 1797; sometimes signature is monogram of encircled 'H'; many of his letters and notebooks extant (RA Library and BM); his son, William Upcott, inherited Blake books from his father.
