Biography: Painter and illustrator. b. London to Livonian/Russian parents; pupil of Fuseli, and patronised by Lawrence. Spent some time copying from the antique in the British Museum before his admission as a student to the Royal Academy Schools in 1824. Most of his subjects were derived from literature, particularly German Romance. Died of liver failure. Admired by Rossetti.
