Frans Hogenberg

Life dates: 1539/40-1590
Biography: Etcher and publisher. Son of Nicolaus (q.v.) of German origin, and brother of Remigius (q.v.). Born in Mechelen 1539 or 1540; possibly to France in 1560; probably active in Antwerp too; possibly in England 1564-1567. Married Katharina von Bönen of Mechelen resulting in one son Johann (later an engraver himself) and a daughter Barbara. In 1568 his name appears on the list of those banned from the Netherlands by the Duke of Alba and the the family were certainly settled in Cologne by 1570. 1578/79 married his second wife, Agnes Lomar, with whom he had six children; 1579 the couple were temporarily imprisoned for holding secret religious meetings. He started producing broadsheets on the French and Netherlandish religious wars from 1569; his last recorded work is his commemorative portrait of the publisher Johan Greve in 1589. He died in Cologne in 1590 (according to Quad); his workshop continued by his son Abraham when barely twenty years old, under the direction of his mother.
