- Biography
- Great collector, especially of Old Master drawings, Trustee of the National Gallery, stockbroker. Held Print Room ticket number 34, issued in October 1864 (BMQ X1935/6, p.22). Began etching in 1862, exhibited in Paris from 1869. He published 13 privately printed volumes of reproductions of drawings in his collection (for which see the introduction to the 27/9 May 1935 auction catalogue; all are in the BM). His collection was dispersed from 1913 onwards: see sales at F.Muller, Amsterdam, 27/8 May 1913, and Sotheby's 7/9 June 1920. The last (posthumous) sales being at Sotheby's on 27/9 May 1935 (drawings), 3/5 June 1935 (prints) and 8 July 1935 (the rest). He gave numerous prints and drawings to the BM during his lifetime. Died in London.
