- He became the Viscount Halifax in 1866. PC, GCB, and MA Oriel College Oxford. Married 29 July 1829 Mary, CI, Fifth daughter of the 2nd Earl Grey. Their children were: Charles Lindley, Francis Lindley, Henry John Lindley, Frederick George Lindley, Emily Charlotte, Alice Louisa and Blanche Edith. This distinguished politician and statesman was MP for Great Grimsby 1826-31, Wareham 1831-2, Halifax 1832-65 and Ripon 1865-6, Joint-Secretary of the Treasury 1832-4, Secretary to the Admiralty 1835-9, Chancelor of the Exchequer 1846-52, President of the Board of Control 1852-55, First Lord of the Admiralty 1855-8, Secretary of State for India 1859-66, and Lord Privy Seal 1870-4. He was raised to the Peerage as Viscount Halifax, of Monk Bretton, county York 21 February 1866.
