Biography: Etcher. Only two contemporary notices of Gaywood have so far been found, although he was the most prolific etcher of his day. In 1658-9 he was paying tithes in the parish of St Sepulchre, and living in the St Cross precinct; and on 17 July 1664 his daughter was baptised in St Sepulchre (see Globe p.204, quoting manuscripts in the Guildhall Library). Vertue recorded nothing about him, apart from a note that the words 'quondam discipulus' of Hollar were to be found under some of his prints (II 158). This is entirely believable on stylistic grounds, although the prints to which Vertue was referring have never been seen since. Vertue might possibly have been confused with Thomas Dudley who does indeed so sign himself (cat.125). The limits of Gaywood's activity given here are taken from the earliest and latest dates found on his prints as recorded by Thomas Dodd (BL Add.Ms.33401 f.23). No-one has yet attempted to make a catalogue of his numerous prints, although this would repay the effort. Globe has no less than seventy-six catalogue numbers that record prints by him, which range in date from 1647 to 1663. Gaywood's etchings cover a very wide range of subjects and sizes. During the 1650s he took over from Hollar as the principal supplier of portrait etchings (as opposed to engravings) to the London trade. Many plates went to Stent, though Gaywood did try to publish others himself. The only address noted until 2009 is on an octagonal head of the Duke of Albemarle dated 1660, which 'are to be sould at the signe of the Pheasant on Snow-Hill', i.e. near St Sepulchre (see above); a volume of prints of animals acquired by the BM in 2009 (2009,7094.1) bears the address of Gaywood as publisher, "neare the Savoy in the Strande :". Of the non-portraits, a great number seem to be copied from the prints of others. The most interesting are attempts to make original prints in the manner of Hollar, as if he were attempting to inherit Hollar's position after his departure for Antwerp. Few of his plates are later than the Restoration, and he fades out completely at the end of the 1660s.
