- Landscape and portrait painter and etcher; bapt. Suffolk 1727; d. London 1788; studied in London 1740-48, primarily at St Martin's Lane Academy under Gravelot and Hayman; learned landscape painting by copying Dutch 17th c. works of Wynants and Ruisdael; settled in Ipswich 1748; moved to Bath 1759-74; probably visited London annually from 1762 onwards; exhibited SA 1761-68; foundation member RA; exh. RA sporadically 1769-83, and after disagreements with RA ehx, FS 1774 and 1783; in London 1774; decided RA style for hanging pictures was unsuitable and began to show pictures in his own studio in London; employed by Royal family 1776; his pupil and assistant was his nephew, Gainsborough Dupont from 1772; drawings in P&D arranged according to Binyon's catalogue.
