- Biography
- Painter, draughtsman, writer and collector of Old Master prints; b. Zurich 1741 or 1743; d. London 1825; trained for the church; acquainted with Lavater; classical education, particularly in literature; translated 'Macbeth' into German; in London 1764, where he translated Winckelmann's 'Reflections on the Painting and Sculpture of the Greeks' 1765; encouraged by Reynolds to paint, but never academically nor technically trained; studied in Rome 1770-78, with brief visits to Venice and Naples; keen interest in literary themes; acquainted with Swedish sculptor Sergel in Rome; changed the spelling of his name to 'Fuseli' at this time; settled in England 1779; exh. SA 1775, 1778, 1783; exh. RA 1774, 1777, 1780-1825 and BI 1806; became ARA 1785 and RA 1790; became Professor of Painting at RA 1799 and Keeper there 1800; contributions to Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery and produced Milton Gallery of 49 subjects in 1799; engravings made after his works; acquainted with Blake; his lectures and other writings published by John Knowles 1831. P&D has volumes 2 and 3 of the latter, extra illustrated with 394 prints of artists and paintings mentioned in the text, compiled by Miss Julia Moore by whom presented (bound in 4 vols) in 1885 along with Fusseli's Roman album (1885,0314.201 - 296 now broken up and mounted individually).
