Biography: Art collector and amateur etcher at Rotterdam. Born in Amsterdam as the only child of the Dutch painter Govert Flinck (q.v.); moved to Rotterdam after his father unexpectedly died in 1660; studied law at Leiden University from 1663 onwards; 1669 married Anna van Berckel in Delft. Patron of Adriaen van der Werff (q.v.) and prolific collector of mainly Italian and Dutch drawings which were sold en bloc after his death in 1723 for 12.000 florins to William Cavendish, the 2nd Duke of Devonshire (q.v.).
