Biography: Painter, sculptor and architect, b. Rome (?)1634, d. Rome 1689. Birth date in Saur. He was the most talented pupil of Pietro da Cortona (q.v.), imitating his master's style so closely that their works have often been confused. Ferri began his training with Cortona in Rome about 1650 and worked alongside fellow pupils under the master's supervision in the decoration of the Gallery of Alexander VII in the Palazzo Quirinale (1656-7) and of the church of S. Marco (1653-7). He was entrusted with the completion or a number of Cortona's commissions, including the cartoons for the mosaic cupola of 'God the Father in Glory' in St Peter's, Rome (1657-9), and the fresco decoration of the ceiling of the Sala di Apollo in the Palazzo Pitti, Florence (1659-61); the ceiling of the Sala di Saturno in the same building seems to have been carried out almost entirely to his own designs (1663-5). Following a short stay in Bergamo, he returned to Rome in 1669 soon after Cortona's death. After completing other works left unfinished by the master, he was in 1670 awarded the most prestigious commission of the day, the decoration of the cupola of the Pamphilj church of S. Agnese in Piazza Navona, Rome. Although this was to have been finished in 1675, Ferri never succeeded in doing so and it was eventually completed after his own death by his pupil Sebastiano Corbellini. Ferri apparently feared comparison with the superbly conceived Virtues painted by Giovanni Battista Gaulli {q.v.) in the pendentives below (1662-72). At the end of his career Ferri was most successful in providing drawings for sculpture, architecture, engravings and applied art objects.
