Biography: Photographer, his work including informal images of the royal family, landscape, architecture, the Crimean war and displays in the British Museum. As early as 1852 Fenton received permission from the Trustees to photograph antiquities within the Museum, and he established a small studio inside the Museum the following year, thus becoming the Museum's first in-house photographer. He left in 1854 to serve as a photographer in the Crimean War (for which he is most widely known) but he was re-appointed on his return in 1856 until the termination of his contract in July 1859. His studio continued to be used by independent photographers, including the Autotype Company (q.v.) who eventually sponsored a new studio constructed in 1884, and seven volumes of photographs of objects were later published by W. A. Mansell & Co. (q.v.). A retrospective exhibition was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, summer 2005; "All the Mighty World: The Photographs of Roger Fenton, 1852-1860", Tate Britain, 21 September 2005 - 2 January 2006.. Archive relating to Fenton is held in the Central Archives & the Department of the Middle East.
