Biography: Painter. Pupil of Maso da S. Friano (1536-71); he also taught himself by copying the works of earlier masters such as Fra Bartolommeo (q.v.), Andrea del Sarto (q.v.) and Pontormo (q.v.). His paintings are found in numerous churches in Florence and Tuscany, including his early masterpiece, the 'Immacolata' of 1591 in S. Remigio and the 'Doubting Thomas' of 1602, now in the Collegiata at Empoli. Like Cigoli (q.v.), he reacted against the 'Mannerism' of the previous generation of Florentine painters and was an exponent of the realistic, classicising tendency associated with the spread of the Counter Reformation in Florence. His paintings are characterised by a compositional clarity and a largeness of form in which strong light illuminates the action of the figures. His drawings have a similar confidence and plasticity, enlivened by emphatic outlines. A large group survives in the Uffizi.
