- Biography
- Painter, lithographer and stained-glass designer. Brother of Eugène, son-in-law of the publisher Charles-Etienne Motte. Pupil of Louis Lafitte and specialised in illustration (e.g. Perrault's 'Contes' and La Fontaine's 'Contes'). His lithographic production is copious (about 3000 lithographs). Shortly after 1848 he became assistant curator of the Cabinet des Estampes of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris and a few months before his death chief curator. In 1857, the Cabinet des Estampes acquired his collection of 113.000 lithographs, engravings and drawings, which is now dispersed through the collection.
