Biography: Born Carshalton, Surrey. Entered Royal Navy 1810, served under Captain Phillip Parker King in Australia when King was surveying the Australian coasts 1818-1821. After returning to England, moved back to New South Wales in 1827. Protégé of 2nd Earl Moutnorris, (previously Viscount Valentia) George Annesley, of Arley Castle. Worked on the ship Amity which went to help establish Fort Wellington at Raffles Bay. Granted land at Wybong and also worked on coastal vessels. Purchased land in 1837 near Paterson and built his house which he named Valentia Lodge.
