- Antiquarian of Fryston Hall, Yorks. Grand Tour 1761-3. Member of Dilettanti from 1764; secretary 1774-8. Bequeathed his extra-illustrated edition of Thomas Pennant's London to the BM. His full-length portrait by Batoni is in the Louvre.
Other books extra-illustrated by J.C.Crowle were sold at Sotheby's, 11 July and 14 November 2002 from the possession of Brigadier C.E.Tyron-Wilson of Dalham Tower, Milnthorpe, Cumbria; they came to him by family descent through Elizabeth Crowle (aunt of J. C. Crowle) who married Daniel Wilson of Dallam (olim Dalham) Tower. (See P&D correspondence with R.Fiske, 2004)
