Biography: History, portrait painter and etcher; born Civitavecchia; pupil of Francesco Trevisani and Sebastiano Conca in Rome; worked initially as decorative painter in Roman churches; first public work Rome 1735; established contact with British patrons in 1738; in England from 1741 to 1766 following the death of his wife; in Holland and Germany briefly 1748-9; made Cavaliere by Frederick William of Prussia; in 1743 worked at Wanstead House for Lord Castlemaine; presented 'The Adoration of the Magi' to the Foundling Hospital in 1750; exhibited at Society of Artists in 1760 and awarded the Society's second price; most significant patron Thomas Coke, Earl of Leicester; held sales in 1762 and 1766 before returning to Rome; exhibited from Rome 1775 also making etchings after of his own designs until his death in 1784.
