Biography: Dancer; born et Menstetten; his father served as officer in the French army and upon his death (1816) Charles and his mother emigrated to England. Taught dancing at the King's Theatre, London, and at the Conservatoire of Paris. Became ballet-master at King's Theatre and at Covent Garden, though he eventually resigned and devoted his time to composing music and teaching dancing. Later settled in Newcastle-on-Tyne, though he died in London.
