Biography: Print artist and manga artist. Known as the first artist to apply the term "manga" to his work, in Jiji Shinpo (27 April 1891 issue). Talent recognized early by Fukuzawa Yukichi. In 1885 joined the San Francisco trading company Kaii Shoten to study lithography and photography, and became the company's owner in 1887. Returned to Japan in 1890. Responsible for satirical pictures in Jiji Shinpo.
