Harold Ingrams

Biography: Diplomat, husband of Doreen Ingrams (q.v.) and father of Leila Ingrams (q.v.). One of three brothers, born in Shrewsbury (Shropshire); attended school in Bromsgrove, later Shrewsbury public school where his father was a schoolmaster as well as vicar in the parish; his mother was a self-educated silversmith and embroiderer. Harold became passionately interested about foreign countries and natural history and was eager to study medicine and carry out research into various illnesses, in particular sleeping sickness that was endemic in Africa. In 1914, at the age of seventeen, he was enlisted in the British army, fought in the First World War was wounded in Belgium and invalided out. In 1919 he joined the Colonial Service and aged twenty-two was posted to Zanzibar as Assistant District Commissioner on Pemba Island. He learnt fluent Kiswahili and started to learn Arabic. He studied the ethnography, anthropology, natural history and history of the islands and published his findings in articles and booklets. His classic work from this period was 'Zanzibar: Its History and Its People' (1931; 1967; 2007). In his final years on Unguja (the main Zanzibar Island) he was Private Secretary both to the Sultan of Zanzibar and to the Resident, and was awarded the Order of Brilliant Star, Zanzibar. During his years in East Africa he made friends with many Hadhramis whose families had settled in Zanzibar, Mombasa and neighbouring places. One dear and highly respected friend, Sayyid Ahmad bin Sumayt, whose family was originally from Hadhramaut, gave Harold letters of introduction to friends there, for he believed that Harold would eventually go there and he wanted him to help Hadhramaut and the Hadhramis. In 1927 he was posted as Assistant Colonial Secretary to the Mauritius and during this time married Doreen Shortt (1930). He also published two books: 'First History of Mauritius' and 'First Geography of Mauritius' (1931). In 1934 they travelled together to Aden where Ingrams was posted as Political Officer; in 1934/35 they travelled to the Hadhramaut, then part of the Eastern Aden Protectorate, and this was followed by his 'Report on Social, Economic and Political Conditions of the Hadramaut' (1936). They then became resident there and became deeply respected for helping negotiate what was, and still is, known as "Ingrams' Peace".
