Biography: Poet; author of 'The Farmer's Boy'. Trade card in Heal Collection (Heal,18.8) advertises "Bloomfield, Ladies Shoe-Maker...The best Real Spanish Leather, at reasonable prices." Heal's annotations on mount: " 'Robert Bloomfield 1766-1823. Poet, worked as shoemaker under his brother George & endured extreme poverty. Wrote his 'Farmer's Boy' 1798 - published 1800. Under-sealer in Seal Office 1802. Manufactured Aeolian harps, embarked unsuccessfully in book trade. Visited Wales & wrote 'Banks of the Wye' 1811. A collected edition of his works appeared in 1824' - Dictionary of National Biography. 'Rural Tales & Ballads' 1802. 'Wild Flowers' 1806. Poems of Robert Bloomfield 2 vols: 1809. R.B. was the son of a tailor in Honnington. His brother George (see above) in a biography prefacing the 'Poems' (published 1809) says 'Robert is a ladies shoemaker & works for M. Davies of Lombard St.' This reference is to the year 1798. See portraits & bookplate in A.H. collection. W.E. Winks in his 'Lives of Illustrious Shoemakers' says that George & Robert worked in No.7 Pitcher's Court, Bell Alley, Coleman Street & that they subsequently removed to Bell Alley. His last years were spent as a shoemaker at Shefford-cum-Campton, Bedfordshire where he died in 1823. It is questionable whether this trade card is Robert Bloomfield's or that of his brother George..."
