Biography: The Museum of Mankind housed the exhibitions, offices and Anthropology Library of the British Museum's Department of Ethnography from 1970 to 1997, in the original University College London building at Burlington Gardens in Mayfair. The Department was moved from the British Museum's overcrowded main site until more space became available with the relocation of the British Library, and its stored collections went to an external facility in east London. The Museum of Mankind became known for its programme of changing exhibitions, many showing artefacts in reconstructed buildings, and for its public activity programmes. The Department began to open new galleries at the British Museum (Bloomsbury site) before the Museum of Mankind closed to the public in 1997. In 2004 the offices and Library were relocated to Bloomsbury. It was then reorganised as the Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, with its Asian collections going to a new Asia Department (formerly Oriental Antiquities) and its European collections to Britain, Europe and Prehistory (formerly Europe and Prehistory). The stored collections started being moved to newly built facility at the British Museum from 2020. [BB; 04/2021]
