Life dates: 1786-1851
Biography: With his brother Sulpiz (q.v.) Boisserée and their friend J.B. Bertram, he accumulated a large collection of German old master paintings following the closure of many churches and monasteries by the invading French; Goethe (q.v.) published various essays on the collection and their correspondence occupies no less that 593 pages in the 1862 edition of Sulpiz's 'Briefwechsel'. In 1819 the brothers moved the collection from Heidelberg to Stuttgart; 1827 the entire collection was purchased by Ludwig I of Bavaria for the Alte Pinakothek.
