- Biography
- Photographer, born Cairo, Egypt, 1972. Nostalgically influenced by the glamour, elegance and melodrama of hand-coloured black-and-white movie-poster prints recalled from childhood and the work of Armenian-Egyptian photographer Van Leo, having grown up in Cairo, imbued with the golden cinematic age of Hollywood on the Nile. Worked as assistant photographer to David Lachapelle, New York (1992-3) and fashion photographer Mario Testino, Paris (1997-8). Exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions internationally (including UK, Spain, Germany, Egypt, Dubai, Turkey, South Africa, Mexico and America), including the 2005-6 ‘Regard des Photographes Arabes Contemporains’ at the Institut de Monde Arabe (IMA), Paris and FotoFest, Houston (2005). Artist-in-residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris (2003), and winner of the Seydou Keita Prize for Portraiture, Recontres Africaines de la Photographie, Bamako, Mali and a prize at the International Photography Awards (IPA), Los Angeles (2005). Works included in exhibition entitled 'Last of the Dictionary Men: Stories from the South Shields Yemeni Sailors' at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts, Newcastle (2008). Based in New York.
