- Biography
- Printer, historian and collector. Compiled vast materials for an unfinished 'Historical Account of the Art of Typography', which were purchased at his death by Edward Harley, Earl of Oxford, whose manuscripts were purchased by the BM at its foundation. They remained loose until they were arranged by BM librarians into the albums that are now in BL Harley 5892 to 5998; see the published Harleian catalogues and Wolf (above).
Some prints were extracted from the Bagford albums in two groups and transferred to P&D in 1814 and 1900. For both transfer lists see Pp 6.39. The larger group of 771 was transferred in 1814 and is in the registers under Gg,4 A to V. Gg 4 was a single solander containing a number of parcels of loose prints, and each letter of the alphabet corresponded to a different parcel; each parcel then had its own sub-numbers. Gg,4W was an additional parcel that did not come from Bagford. Most of these prints have written in pen and ink on the recto or on the verso a large B, which was added in 1814 when the prints were extracted from the Library albums and transferred to P&D (now Lugt 4639). See Pp,6.39 for a listing by Harleian manuscript number, and the register for Gg,4 for a listing of the individual prints in the parcels into which they had been rearranged by subject. Most of the prints were portraits, which have now been placed in the main portrait series; the Hollars were placed under Hollar, for which see the register for Ee,2; see also Ii,1 and 3 and Qq,6 for some portraits and topography; and Y,1 for historical prints).
A further 251 prints of more varied character were transferred in 1900, and were registered as 1900,1019.1 to 251; these were placed in their appropriate series. A handful of other prints have also been transferred individually.
