Robert Greene

Biography: Map and bookseller who advertised in the Term Catalogues from 1674 to 1685, and dealt primarily in maps, cards and topographical books (see Plomer). Between 1675 and his death he published at the Rose and Crown in Budge Row. He was probably the same man as was apprenticed to John Garrett in 1652 for eight years. An inventory of his property made by William Berry and John Garrett survives, in which his estate amounted to £326. In his will he left his tools and plates to his son Nathan, but since he was under age the business was continued by his older sister Elizabeth for a short period. The stock was soon sold to Philip Lea. (For all this see Tyacke p.117). In 1678 Greene issued a satirical print on the murder of Sir Edmundberry Godfrey (BMSat 1067) at the Rose and Crown address.
