Biography: A printseller (not a bookseller) working at the Unicorn in Cornhill near the Exchange. The only dated print that Riddiard issued was of postures of pikemen by Cockson in 1636 (Hind I pp.255-7, the plate was first published in 1619). In the following year, his sign and address were taken over by the bookseller William Hope, who continued until 1648 (STC). Hope had previously in 1634-6 been at the Glove in Cornhill, which he seems to have shared with the printseller Thomas Booth. Riddiard's publications are a curious mixture. A portrait of the Earl of Oxford by Vaughan (Hind II 60.45) is posthumous, referring to his death in 1632; those of the Duke of Richmond and the Earl of Strafford (Hind III 61.49 and 54) have no clues to date them, nor does one of Charles I (Hind III 107-17). One of Thomas Scott by Marshall (Hind III 128.88) might be as early as the 1626, the year of Scott's assassination (a curious feature of this print is that it bears a second excudit of an unknown John Scott). An anonymous portrait of Sir William Waller as Parliamentary general must belong to 1642-5 (Hind III 355.63). Riddiard issued a sheet of the first ten persecutions of the early church (STC 11227.5). He also reprinted various plates apart from the Cockson mentioned above: eg. the Family of James I by Gerrit Mountain (Hind II p.311), and Prince Henry by Hole (Hind II p.321). In 1662 a John Ruddiard (obviously a relation of William) published a broadside at the Unicorn address in collaboration with Wildeburgh (qv). Wing also records the title of a writing book of 1661, printed for John Ruddiard and sold by Matthew Collings (qv). Another drawing book 'conteyning the ground-work of the arts of drawing, limning, painting, graving, etching' was advertised for sale by John Ruddiard at the Unicorn in the Intellegencer of 25 January 1664.
