Erhard Altdorfer

Life dates: 1480?-1561
Biography: Printmaker, about whom little is known. He probably worked with his elder brother, Albrecht, in Regensburg during his early career. By 1512, Erhard had moved to Schwerin where he was court painter and architect to the Dukes of Mecklenburg, until 1561, the last recorded date that he is mentioned. A few signed works of very diverse styles by the artist exist: an engraving 'Lady with a Peacock Shield', dated 1506; one etching of a landscape, a woodcut of a tournament, dated 1512, and two out of eighty-five woodcut illustrations to the Lübeck Bible, completed in 1534. Various drawings and prints have been connected with his name, but many of these attributions are inconclusive and it is not possible to establish a clear development of his style.
