Biography: Print publisher and engraver. Trade card in Heal Collection (Heal.99,78) advertises "Visiting-Cards, Book-Plates, Shop-Bills, Arms, Crests & Cyphers, Engraved & Printed by J. Lockington in Shug Lane, near the upper End of St. James's Hay Market, London." Heal's annotations on mount: "Fincham's 'Engravers of Bookplates' gives Lockington 1780-'90." Nigel Tattersfield (email Jan 2021): 'John Lockington (fl.c.1776-c.1793) of Savile Passage, off Burlington Street, where he had premises from about 1783. He was a prolific and assured engraver of trade and visiting cards, perhaps best known for his Book of Ornamented Crests, first published in 1791, but more commonly found dated 1812. Trade directories do not seem to list him after 1794'.
