Osman Digna

Biography: Said to be of Kurdish origin, he was born at Sawakin (Suakin) in the Sudan in 1840. He was a leader of the Mahdist revolt that broke out in the Sudan in 1881. His men broke the square formed at Tamai in the early morning hours of March 13, 1884, by a British force striving to relieve Khartoum. He died in Egypt in 1926, a captive of the British authorities.
