Biography: Founder of St. Bartholomew's Hospital and Priory; probably the same as the canon of St Paul's Cathedral called Raherius; he rose in courtly circles through flattery, but, suddenly penitent, he undertook a pilgrimage to Rome, where he fell seriously ill; he promised to build a hospital if he recovered and his health was restored; when returning to England he had a vision of Saint Bartholomew, who instructed him to build a hosptial in Smithfields; the date of the foundation of the hospital and priory was remembered in the 'Liber fundacionis ecclesiae Sancti Bartholomei Londoniensis' (1180s, and exstant as a 15th century text), as 1123; Rahere was the first prior; the priory followed the rule of St. Augustine.
