The following biographical information is courtesy Nicolas Stogdon:
This artist, active circa 1783-1827, is invariably referred to as John Barry (by Daphne Foskett, British Portrait Miniatures; Getty, ULAN; in museums, the V&A, MMA among others; and elsewhere).
Stogdon can clarify that his correct name is James, having found an advertisement in 'The Morning Post,' March 27, 1806, in the wake of the death of James Barry, R. A.:
'MR. BARRY, (Miniature Painter), perceiving that the death of the late JAMES BARRY, Esq. formerly Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy, has occasioned repeated mistakes among his friends, in consequence of his having the same Christian and Surname with the deceased, finds it necessary to inform the public that he still resides at No. 57, New Bond-street.'
He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy: in 1785-88; 1789-94; 1796-1808 (including a 'Portrait of himself' in 1802); 1816-19; 1825; 1827. His first name is not once given in full in the catalogues, but his addresses are, except for the years 1802-1804 when addresses were omitted. His moves from lodging to lodging can be traced though advertisements and the R. A. catalogues.
