- Biography
- Born Brussels where he studied principally as a landscape painter under J. Fouquières; came to Paris in 1621 (naturalised in 1629) and worked with Poussin on the decoration of the Luxembourg palace under the direction of N. Duchesne, whose daughter he married and whom he was to succeed as first painter to the Queen Mother, Marie de Médicis, in 1628. Received commissions from the King in 1634-8, including the Vow of Louis XIII for Notre-Dame (now at Caen), and in 1635, amongst other portraits, Richelieu commissioned the Louis XIII crowned by Victory (Louvre). He was a founding member of the Académie Royale in 1648, his morceau de réception being the Saint Philippe of 1649 in the Louvre; he became professeur and recteur, lecturing on works by Titian, Poussin, Raphael and Reni; died Paris
